Summary of the 2012 Wellesley Invitational at Wellesley College, January 28, 2012
May 4, 2012
The 2012 Wellesley Invitation was held at the beginning of the 2012 spring semester. It was a small event with only three college attending: UMass, Mt Holyoke, and Wellesley. We got up early to drive out to Wellesley College. Despite our early departure, we still had a successful day. As it was held at Wellesley College, only women were invited to the scrimmage, but we were happy to have the support of Zach Boynton (epee), Mike Stevens (epee), Kevin Rizza (epee), Patrick Tom (sabre), and Caity Gebhart (who was recovering from mono at the time; foil). Thank you to them for waking up extraordinarily early to come out to help coach and support the women!
In attendance were:
Women’s Foil: Jess Rehberger, Kayly Tillman, Rose Zheng, and Melanie Muller
Women’s Epee: Paola Arango, Terry Palanukorn, and Cat Paquin
Women’s Sabre: Jade Hedrick, Alecz Schmelzle, and Anya Degtyareva
The format was intercollegiate, where everyone fenced everyone on the other team, within the same weapon and gender. We finished the day off moderately well. Overall, the women won against Mt. Holyoke and lost against Wellesley. Specifically:
UMass (8) loss to Wellesley College (19)
UMass (16) defeat Mt. Holyoke College (11)
For the overall squad scores:
Although we were not able to fence against more schools, it was a fun scrimmage to open up our fencing season for the spring semester.
We will be attending the Wellesley Invitational again next year and look forward to fencing more women’s team in 2013!
