Summary from the 2012 NFC #3 at Boyden Gymnasium – February 11, 2012
May 4, 2012
The 2012 NFC tournament, or the Northeast Fencing Conference, was held at Boyden Gym at UMass on the 11th of February. This was a particularly special day, as UMass has not hosted a big fencing tournament since 1996. It was exciting for us, and a shock to our systems not to wake up at four in the morning to get to the meet on time.
The night before, we set up for the tournament, taping down strips, carrying up tables and chairs for the scoring machines and the refs respectively, and overall clean up. We finished setting up for the tournament early the next morning. Also, here’s a special thanks to the varsity teams for lending us the use of the room during their competitive season! We cannot thank you enough for your kindness.
We started fencing promptly around 8 in the morning. Except for Vassar arriving late, the tournament ran rather smoothly, for which we were glad. We managed to finish on time, including take down, allowing for the basketball players to play after us on the courts.
The format of the tournament was intercollegiate, where everyone fenced everyone on the other team, within their own weapon and gender. Against each college, we fenced a total of 9 bouts, 3 per strip, which totaled out to 54 bouts for men and 63 bouts for women.
In attendance were:
MF: Stephen Gillman (A), Rob Donadio (B), Christopher Allum (C), Nathan Vass (Alt)
ME: Zach Boynton (A), Kevin Rizza (B), Vinny Campione (C), Mike Stevens (Alt), and Niko Karouta

The women’s team, on the other hand, won against Smith (14-13) and Dartmouth (14-13), and lost to BC, Vassar, Sacred Heart, UNH, and Tufts. We had close competition from UNH though, losing at 12-15.
