Parent Organization: Student Affairs and Campus Life

Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people — providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order. –Permaculture Research Institute of Australia website (http://permaculture.org.au/)

The word “permaculture” was originally a combination of the words “permanent” and “agriculture” when it was introduced in the 1970s and is today defined as a combination of the words “permanent” and “culture” as it offers skills, tools, solutions, and strategies for healing social and ecological systems. –UMass Permaculture website (http://www.umasspermaculture.com/)

The Friends of UMass Permaculture (FOUMP) will provide an opportunity to connect students who are interested in permaculture and who want to be or are involved in the permaculture gardens on campus. FOUMP will educate members as well as the surrounding campus community about permaculture and the benefits of supporting sustainable agriculture.
