UMass / Five College Sailing Finishes 8th in Newport

Posted by Johannes Raatz - Sailing on April 9, 2012

The UMass / Five College Sailing Team finished in 8th place of the New England Dinghy Championship in Newport, Rhode Island.

Division A was crewed by Emmie Schreck (UMass '13) and skippered by Johannes Raatz (UMass '15).  Division B was crewed by Marco Catipovic (Amherst, '14) and skippered by Alex Dion (Mount Holyoke '15).  They eagerly welcomed the "warm" weather and sun, as they raced in this tight regatta.

From Diana Weidenbacker, the head coach of UNH and race committe chairperson for the regatta:

"

Saturday

Six races were sailed in both A and B divisions. The day started with great breeze which ranged from 10-14, dropping to 5-10. Mid afternoon the breeze made a sharp right hand turn.  After resetting the course B division enjoyed a shifty set before retiring for the day. One protest was heard resulting in a DSQ.  One redress was heard and denied. Report time on Sunday was moved to 10:00 to accommodate early services for Easter. Two more sets in each division will be sailed to morrow to complete the regatta with the top two teams qualifying for New England's.

Mitchell had to retire early due to illness. Several Reeces Races were sailed for an afternoon pick me up. MMA is walking away from the regatta with the A division scoring a searing 5 bullets and one second place.

Sunday

The breeze piped up around 10:45 just when teams got to the starting area after a 10am report time.  Two sets in A and B were sailed with leads changing throughout.

The breeze oscillated all day, breeze from 8-12 with only one significant course change by the RC. Once again MMA smoked the competition and kudos go to their entire team as it is an entire team that brings the win home. Congratulations to MMA, A division Blake Burgess '15  and Scott Goldsberg '14 (a combined force to be reckoned with) and Christopher Hulse '12 and Molly Howe '15 for winning the NEDT and to Weslyan for their second place finish qualifying them for New England Champs at Harvard next weekend.  Good luck to both.
