Event Time and Date
Our undergraduate legal assistants are selected from applicants each fall and spring semester. They work 32 hours per week, and receive 12 credits for their work. As integral members of the staff, legal assistants play a vital role at the Student Legal Services Office. Each legal assistant works under the direct supervision of a professional staff member, and has responsibilities ranging from client interviewing to maintaining case files, legal research, drafting letters, participating in administrative hearing, observing court hearing, court field trips, community legal education, and limited clerical and support tasks.
While working in our office, students have an excellent opportunity to gain communication, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills along with a concrete understanding of the advocacy process and the lawyer’s role in the judicial system. For students considering a career in the legal field, an internship at SLSO can provide invaluable experience and insight in making a decision. More than 500 students have successfully completed the Legal Assistant Training Program and a majority have gone on to law school or law related careers.
If you are interested in an internship, please visit www.umass.edu/slso/internship for more information or to download an application.
Deadline to apply is April 1, 2017 at 11:59PM.
